India’s Explosive 253/7 Puts England on the Back Foot in T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Final Thriller at Wankhede

Defending champions India unleashed a batting masterclass at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, posting a colossal 253/7 against England in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The total stands as the highest ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match, putting immense pressure on England, who must now chase 254 runs to reach Sunday’s final against New Zealand.

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to field first under the Mumbai lights, hoping to exploit any early movement. However, India’s aggressive top order had other plans. Opener Sanju Samson delivered a breathtaking knock of 89 off just 42 balls, falling agonisingly short of a century but dismantling the English attack with precision and power. His innings featured explosive strokeplay, including multiple towering sixes that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Samson found solid support throughout the innings. Ishan Kishan provided a fiery start with a quickfire 39 off 18 balls, while Shivam Dube contributed a destructive 43 off 25. Lower-order cameos from Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya ensured India maintained momentum right until the final over, with the team smashing 19 sixes in total – a testament to their fearless approach on a high-scoring Wankhede pitch.

England’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught. Will Jacks and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each, but the economy rates reflected the carnage, with Jofra Archer conceding heavily despite a late wicket.

This performance marks a statement from Suryakumar Yadav’s side, who have looked increasingly dominant as the tournament progressed. The highest successful chase in T20 World Cup semi-finals or finals remains a rare feat, and England will need something extraordinary to overturn this deficit in front of a passionate Indian crowd.

As the second innings gets underway, all eyes are on whether England can pull off a historic chase or if India will march into yet another final. The winner will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad on March 8 for cricket’s ultimate prize.

The atmosphere at Wankhede was electric throughout, with fans roaring every boundary and six. Cricket fans worldwide are glued to what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to this blockbuster semi-final.
