The Indian Navy will commission stealth frigate Taragiri (F41), armed with BrahMos missiles, on April 3 in Mumbai.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over the ceremony, marking a milestone in India’s maritime sovereignty and self-reliance.

Taragiri is the fourth vessel under Project 17A, a 6,670-tonne warship built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The frigate represents a generational leap in design, featuring a sleeker form and reduced radar cross-section that enhances stealth capabilities. With indigenous content exceeding 75 per cent, Taragiri showcases India’s growing industrial ecosystem, supported by over 200 MSMEs and thousands of jobs under the government’s Aatmanirbharta initiative.

Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, Taragiri offers high-speed endurance and versatility for multi-dimensional maritime operations. Its advanced weapon suite includes supersonic surface-to-surface BrahMos missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and a specialised anti-submarine warfare system. These systems are integrated through a state-of-the-art combat management system, enabling rapid response to threats.

Beyond combat, Taragiri is designed for modern diplomacy and humanitarian missions. Its flexible profile makes it suitable for high-intensity warfare as well as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

The commissioning of Taragiri strengthens the Indian Navy’s position as a combat-ready, cohesive, and credible force. With vessels designed, built, and crewed by Indians, the Navy continues to secure India’s ocean frontiers while advancing the nation’s strategic autonomy.
