The Indian women’s Football team has surged seven places to 63rd in the latest FIFA rankings following a decisive 2-1 victory over Thailand in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers.
This marks India’s highest ranking in nearly two years, reaffirming its growing stature in Asian football.
The Blue Tigresses began their campaign with a dominant 13-0 win over Mongolia, followed by convincing victories against Timor-Leste (4-0) and Iraq (5-0). With Thailand and India level on points heading into the final group match, midfielder Sangita Basfore rose to the occasion, netting twice to secure India’s qualification for the continental tournament — this time on merit, unlike the previous edition, where the team had to withdraw due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
This achievement not only boosts morale but also signals a promising future for women’s football in India, as the team prepares to compete among Asia’s elite.
