India has soared to the top of the global science stage, securing Rank 1 at the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2025.

Held in Mumbai from August 12 to 21, the prestigious competition saw participation from nearly 300 students representing 64 countries.

The Indian contingent, trained by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), bagged four gold medals and one silver—marking a historic achievement for the host nation. This year’s edition was especially significant, with 12 countries joining the Olympiad for the first time.

Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chancellor of the Homi Bhabha National Institute, praised the young scientists, urging them to “explore the frontiers of science with curiosity and commitment.” The victory not only underscores India’s growing prowess in science education but also serves as a beacon for aspiring astronomers across the country.

Established in 2007, the IOAA is a premier global platform for high-school students passionate about astronomy and astrophysics. It challenges participants with rigorous problems in observational astronomy, theoretical physics, and data analysis—fostering innovation and international collaboration.

India’s triumph at IOAA 2025 is more than a medal tally—it’s a testament to the country’s investment in nurturing scientific talent and its commitment to global excellence.
