India is set to implement a major shift in highway travel as cash payments at toll plazas will be completely discontinued from April 10. The move marks a nationwide transition toward a fully digital toll collection system aimed at improving efficiency and commuter experience.

Digital Tolling Becomes Mandatory

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will now process all toll transactions exclusively through digital modes such as FASTag and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

This decision is part of a broader initiative to modernise India’s highway infrastructure and eliminate delays caused by cash transactions at toll booths.

Benefits for Commuters

Authorities have highlighted several advantages of the fully digital system:

  • Faster vehicle movement and reduced waiting time
  • Improved traffic flow across toll plazas
  • Greater transparency in toll collection
  • Standardised payment processes nationwide

The transition will cover over 1,150 toll plazas across national highways and expressways.

Toll Rate Revisions Announced

Alongside the digital rollout, revised toll rates have been introduced in some regions. Key changes include:

  • National highway tolls may increase by up to 10% for cars
  • Expressway tolls in Uttar Pradesh may rise between 1.5% and 3.5%
  • Revised rates apply to cars, SUVs, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles

These adjustments are part of routine revisions aligned with operational and maintenance costs.

What Commuters Should Do

To ensure a smooth transition, commuters are advised to:

  • Maintain an active FASTag account
  • Keep sufficient balance to avoid penalties or delays
  • Link their accounts with banks or UPI for seamless payments

Authorities are also planning awareness campaigns and enforcement measures to support users during the transition.
