India scored a formidable 349/8 in 50 overs and set South Africa a 350-run target in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.
Virat Kohli dominated the innings with a brilliant 135, registering his 52nd ODI century and breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s world record for most centuries in a single international format. Rohit Sharma contributed 57 runs, while captain KL Rahul added a fluent 60. As a result, India crossed the 300-run mark with ease.
Kohli and Rohit built a strong second-wicket partnership that steadied India after an early breakthrough. Consequently, the innings gained momentum, and Rahul’s half-century further consolidated the total. Kuldeep Yadav added crucial runs at the end, sneaking in a double of leg byes off the final ball to push India to 349.
South Africa’s bowlers struggled against India’s batting firepower. However, Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman picked up two wickets each, while Corbin Bosch bowled a disciplined final over, conceding only six runs.
Now, South Africa faces a daunting chase of 350 runs. Therefore, their batting depth will be tested thoroughly, and the Ranchi crowd eagerly awaits an exciting second innings as India’s bowlers prepare to defend the total.
