In a significant diplomatic milestone, India was elected on Wednesday to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a three-year term spanning 2026 to 2028.
The ECOSOC plays a central role in promoting the three pillars of sustainable development — economic, social, and environmental — making it one of the most influential organs within the United Nations system.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared the news via X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude:
“India was elected to the Economic and Social Council for the term 2026-28 @UN today. Thank member states for their overwhelming support and reposing their trust in us. Appreciate the efforts of @IndiaUNNewYork.”
He further affirmed India’s global developmental commitment, stating that the country remains dedicated to championing development issues and will continue efforts to strengthen ECOSOC’s role and impact.
ECOSOC is responsible for recommending global policy frameworks on critical economic and social matters, and India’s election reinforces its standing as a key player in shaping multilateral development agendas.
