The Indian government has empowered the Chief of the Army Staff to mobilise every officer and enrolled member of the Territorial Army for essential guard duties or to supplement the regular army.
This decision, issued under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rules, 1948, allows 14 Infantry Battalions to be embodied across various commands, including Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northern.
The move comes at a time when tensions have escalated along the western border, prompting heightened security measures. By integrating the Territorial Army into active defence operations, the government aims to enhance India’s preparedness and strategic capabilities. Defence analysts believe this will significantly improve operational efficiency and ease the burden on the regular army.
Officials emphasise that the Territorial Army has historically played a crucial role in supporting national security, disaster relief, and internal stability. With this new directive, its members will now have an even greater responsibility in safeguarding the nation.
