In a high-octane prelude to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket team delivered a commanding performance, defeating South Africa by 30 runs in their opening warm-up match at DY Patil Stadium.

This victory not only showcased India’s batting prowess but also served as a fitting rematch of the 2024 final, where India had clinched the title.

Electing to bat first, India set an imposing total of 240/5 in their 20 overs, fueled by aggressive stroke play from the top order. Opener Ishan Kishan stole the show with a blistering 53 off just 20 balls, including an astonishing seven sixes that left the South African bowlers reeling. His innings provided the perfect launchpad, as Tilak Varma contributed a solid 45, while all-rounders Axar Patel (35 not out) and Hardik Pandya (30) added crucial late fireworks to push the score beyond 240.

South Africa’s chase started promisingly but faltered under pressure from India’s disciplined bowling attack. Opener Ryan Rickelton scored a brisk 44, and middle-order batsman Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten on 45, offering some resistance. However, the Proteas could only manage 210/7, losing wickets at regular intervals and struggling to match the required run rate in the death overs.

This warm-up encounter highlights India’s strong preparations as defending champions, with the tournament proper set to begin later this month. Fans can expect more excitement as both teams fine-tune their squads in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
