In a landmark move aimed at deepening strategic cooperation, the United States and India on Friday signed a 10-year Defence Framework Agreement, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
Announcing the development, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the partnership reflects the “strongest-ever defence ties” between the two nations and will serve as a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence.
A New Chapter in India-US Defence Cooperation
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Hegseth shared that he met India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and officially signed the agreement. He emphasized that the framework will enhance coordination, intelligence sharing, and technology cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
“We’re enhancing our coordination, info sharing, and tech cooperation. Our defence ties have never been stronger,” Hegseth posted.
The new framework builds on previous defence initiatives and is expected to bolster joint military exercises, defence innovation, and strategic technology transfers across land, sea, air, and cyber domains.
Regional Significance and ASEAN Context
The signing took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), scheduled for November 1 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event coincided with the ASEAN-India Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting, where leaders discussed expanding regional security and cooperation.
Rajnath Singh highlighted that India’s participation in the ASEAN meetings aligns with the country’s ‘Act East Policy’, which focuses on strengthening political, economic, and defence ties with Southeast Asia.
“The ASEAN-India Defence Ministers’ meeting aims to deepen defence and security cooperation among member states and advance the Act East Policy,” Singh said ahead of the event.
A Cornerstone for Peace and Stability
The new 10-year framework underscores the growing trust and strategic alignment between the world’s two largest democracies. Defence analysts note that the agreement will not only enhance interoperability between the Indian and US armed forces but also act as a deterrent against regional threats.
Both nations are expected to focus on:
-
Joint maritime security operations
-
Defence technology sharing and co-development
-
Intelligence and cyber cooperation
-
Strengthening supply chain resilience for critical defence components
The framework is being hailed as a step toward a more secure and balanced Indo-Pacific region.
Looking Ahead
The signing of the framework symbolizes the deepening of India-US strategic relations, which have evolved from basic cooperation to an advanced defence partnership.
With the agreement in place, both countries are expected to pursue a series of follow-up initiatives over the coming decade to promote peace, technology collaboration, and mutual defence readiness.
