Cyclone Arnab Odisha Impact

Odisha is bracing for peak monsoon fury today as the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab continues to hover over the region.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra cautioned on Wednesday that the state—particularly its southern districts—will experience maximum rainfall and strong winds as the system slowly shifts.

Despite completing its landfall process, Cyclone Arnab has not moved far off. A sudden shift in direction during the landfall slowed down its movement, extending the landfall process over six hours. As a result, its lingering impact will trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in several isolated areas, mainly across South Odisha.

High Winds and Urban Waterlogging Threat

According to the IMD, wind speeds in South Odisha are expected to reach 80 to 90 km/h, while interior districts adjoining Chhattisgarh may witness gusts ranging between 45 and 55 km/h.

Dr Mohapatra warned that torrential rains coupled with gale-force winds could lead to a sharp rise in river water levels and severe waterlogging in urban low-lying areas. Disruption to road communication, power supply, and local transit remains a key concern over the next 24 hours.

New System Brewing in the Andaman Sea

Adding to the weather concerns, the IMD DG revealed that a new cyclonic circulation has already formed over the Andaman Sea while Cyclone Arnab was making landfall. While this new system is forecasted to concentrate into a low-pressure area, its exact trajectory and potential impact on the Indian coast are currently under close observation.

Safety Advisory Issued

The administration has issued a strict advisory urging citizens, especially those residing in South Odisha, low-lying zones, and riverbanks, to remain on high alert. Residents are advised to move to safer structures, follow official administrative guidelines, and avoid unnecessary travel.

“The IMD is monitoring the situation continuously, and fresh updates will be issued as the situation evolves,” assured Dr Mohapatra.
