An Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) student has been arrested for allegedly raping a fellow woman student inside a boys’ hostel on campus, police confirmed on Saturday.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday, following which the victim filed an FIR at Haridevpur Police Station. The accused was detained the same night and later formally arrested, authorities said.
According to the FIR, the woman was invited to the hostel for a counselling session by the accused. During the interaction, she consumed a drink allegedly laced with sedatives, after which she lost consciousness.
“The woman stated she realised she had been raped only after regaining consciousness,” a senior police officer said.
She further alleged that the accused threatened her with serious consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.
Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the case. Forensic samples are being collected, and CCTV footage from the hostel premises is under review.
IIM-Calcutta has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Sources within the institution say internal disciplinary procedures may follow depending on the findings of the police probe.
This incident comes less than two weeks after a shocking case of alleged gangrape at a law college in Kolkata, raising fresh concerns about student safety and campus security protocols.
