India captain Suryakumar Yadav is facing possible disciplinary action after the International Cricket Council (ICC) accepted a complaint filed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding his post-match comments following India’s win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup group stage on September 14.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, ICC match referee Richie Richardson emailed the Indian team management confirming that two formal reports from the PCB were under review. After examining evidence and statements, Richardson concluded that Suryakumar’s remarks “potentially harmed the image of the sport” and warranted a charge for conduct that could bring the game into disrepute.
What Suryakumar Said
After India’s victory, Suryakumar dedicated the win to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed solidarity with the armed forces.
“Perfect occasion, taking the time out, we stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We express our solidarity… Want to dedicate the win to all our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery,” he said at the post-match presentation.
In the press conference, he added that the Indian team “followed BCCI and government instructions” by avoiding post-match handshakes with Pakistani players.
PCB’s Complaint
The PCB alleged that the remarks politicised the sport and violated ICC’s neutrality code. The complaint has escalated tensions between the two boards, which had already exchanged protests during the tournament.
Suryakumar now has the option to accept the charge or face a formal hearing involving the ICC match referee, BCCI, PCB representatives, and himself. A final decision is expected soon, which could carry disciplinary consequences for the Indian captain.
