A 25-year-old Hindu man, Chanchal Bhowmik, died after a fire broke out late Friday night in Narsingdi, Bangladesh, police officials confirmed. Bhowmik was reportedly asleep inside a garage attached to a shop when the blaze started.
According to Narsingdi Police Superintendent Abdullah Al Faruque, initial investigations indicate suspicious activity captured on nearby CCTV cameras. Authorities are currently examining whether the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction or involved an external factor.
“We have reviewed CCTV footage from the area and observed a person moving near the site before the incident,” SP Faruque told news agency ANI. “We are investigating all possibilities to determine the exact cause of the fire.”
Fire Origin and Rescue Efforts
Police officials stated that the fire originated inside the shop where Bhowmik was sleeping. Fire service personnel were forced to break open the shutter in an attempt to rescue him, but the effort was unsuccessful. His body was later recovered in a charred condition.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Rising Concerns Over Minority Safety
This incident comes amid growing concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly as the country approaches national elections scheduled for February 12, 2026. Reports of violence and harassment targeting minority communities have drawn both domestic and international attention.
In recent months, several incidents involving members of the Hindu community have been reported across different regions, including Narsingdi and Naogaon. Authorities have stated that investigations are underway in each case to establish facts and ensure accountability.
Official Data on Incidents
According to police data shared earlier this month by Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus, a total of 645 incidents involving minority communities were reported in 2025. Of these, 71 were identified as having communal elements, while the remaining cases were classified as non-communal.
The Government of India has also expressed concern on multiple occasions regarding the protection of minorities in Bangladesh, urging the need for peace, accountability, and the rule of law.
Authorities in Narsingdi have reiterated their commitment to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into Bhowmik’s death.
