Mumbai woke up to a grim forecast on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city and a red alert for surrounding coastal districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Pune.

The warning follows a weekend of relentless rainfall that triggered waterlogging, traffic snarls, and infrastructure damage across the metropolis.

Visuals from Sion’s Gandhi Market and Vile Parle’s Western Expressway revealed knee-deep water and stranded vehicles. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported 19 tree falls, six short circuits, and two wall collapses on Sunday alone. Fortunately, no injuries were recorded.

In response, the BMC declared a holiday for all schools, while the Greater Mumbai Police urged residents to avoid non-essential travel. “Please plan your commute with care and step out only if necessary,” the police chief tweeted, adding that emergency services remain on high alert.

Local train services experienced delays, though no diversions were reported in BEST bus routes. The IMD noted a slight dip in rain intensity on Sunday morning, but warned of renewed heavy spells in the next 3–4 hours.

The city’s resilience is once again being tested as authorities scramble to manage the fallout of nature’s fury. With more rain expected, Mumbai’s preparedness and public cooperation will be crucial in weathering the storm.
