After days of oppressive heat and humidity, Odisha is set to receive significant rainfall on May 27 and 28, with southern districts expected to be most affected, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
A low-pressure system is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining northern Bay of Bengal, which could intensify within two days of formation. The IMD has forecast widespread light to moderate rain across Odisha, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated in Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Koraput districts.
“Rainfall activities will begin to increase from the 27th and 28th. While most parts of Odisha will experience rain, southern districts may see isolated intense showers,” said Manorama Mohanty, Director of the IMD Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.
In addition to the rainfall, Kalbaisakhi storms (Nor’westers) are also forecast to bring thunderstorms and lightning to 26 districts. Yellow alerts have been issued in anticipation of strong winds and thunder over the next six days. The overlap of these Nor’wester systems with the upcoming rain-bearing low-pressure system could make the weather conditions more volatile.
This spell of rain is expected to aid the advancement of the southwest monsoon, which is likely to reach Kerala in the next 2–3 days. IMD forecasts indicate that Odisha will come under monsoon coverage in the following weeks under favorable conditions.
