Harmanpreet Kaur has made her mark in Indian cricket history by becoming only the second woman from India to score over 1,000 runs as captain in One Day Internationals (ODIs).
She achieved this milestone during the first ODI of a three-match series against the West Indies on December 22 at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
Kaur reached this landmark in just 26 matches, making her the second Indian woman, after the legendary Mithali Raj, to accomplish it. Mithali Raj, considered one of the greatest women cricketers, has scored 5,319 runs in 155 ODI matches as captain—a record that remains unmatched in Indian women’s cricket.
As of now, Harmanpreet Kaur has accumulated 1,012 runs as captain, maintaining an impressive average of 53.26, which includes three centuries and five fifties. Her highest score as captain is an outstanding 143*, achieved against England in September 2022 at Canterbury.
Kaur’s ability to perform consistently under pressure has solidified her status as a leader of the Indian women’s team, and this latest achievement further highlights her significance to the team. Notably, while her accomplishment is historic in women’s cricket, she has also become the 10th Indian batter to reach this milestone in ODIs across both men’s and women’s cricket.
The list of male cricketers who have also crossed the 1,000-run mark as captain includes icons such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Sourav Ganguly, all of whom are prominent figures in Indian cricket.
Earlier in the match, Harmanpreet, returning after a knee injury, made a quick contribution of 34 runs off 23 balls, helping India set a solid total of 314/9. The team benefited from a strong opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and debutant Prakiti Rawal. Ultimately, India won by a massive 211 runs, bowling out the West Indies for just 103 runs. Renuka Singh delivered an outstanding performance, claiming five wickets for 29 runs.
