Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi issued a stern warning to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, October 31, 2026, claiming that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar “won’t survive in his position for long” and hinting at upcoming revelations regarding the poll chief.
Speaking at a symbolic “public impeachment” session organized by the INDIA bloc at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, Gandhi accused the ruling party of shutting down constitutional institutions to prevent opposition scrutiny over electoral roll revisions.
INDIA Bloc Passes Symbolic Impeachment Resolution
During the lawn-side gathering in New Delhi, leaders across the opposition alliance unanimously passed a six-point resolution seeking the “public impeachment” of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging electoral manipulation and treason.
- Core Charges: The resolution accused Kumar of orchestrating a “manipulated, truncated, and destructive” Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, facilitating the alleged wrongful deletion of millions of voter names.
- Garden Proceedings: Decrying parliamentary access restrictions, Gandhi remarked: “It is absurd that the entire Opposition has to sit in a garden to discuss the CEC’s impeachment as every institution is closed for us. Gyanesh Kumar won’t survive as CEC. If the BJP insists on keeping him after what we reveal, we’ll know what its game is.”
- Precursor to Ramlila Rally: The symbolic proceedings serve as the prelude to the INDIA bloc’s scheduled “Chalo Dilli” mass demonstration at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1.
BJP Fires Back, Terming Session a ‘Mockery of Parliament’
The BJP launched a sharp counteroffensive against the opposition event, with party spokesperson Sambit Patra addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters to dismiss the proceedings as political theatre.
Slamming the Congress leadership, Patra asserted that the mock session was merely a failed attempt to re-launch Gandhi’s political career:
”This ‘satellite’ is never going to launch. I have a humble request: please, do not dismantle this mock parliament you have created. Just seat Rahul Gandhi on the treasury benches, have him wear a ‘kurta-pyjama’, and let him sit there while you chant ‘Prime Minister’ every single day. Keep him as your ‘mock Prime Minister’ for life; we have absolutely no objection.”
Patra defended the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI), denying allegations of voter roll tampering or Form 6 registration irregularities while accusing Kharge and Gandhi of spreading deliberate falsehoods.
