Guwahati Floods: Schools Shut, Traffic Chaos as IMD Warns of More Rain

A night of intense rainfall has submerged large parts of Guwahati, Assam, causing significant disruptions.

Residents struggled through knee-deep water, while some areas saw water levels reach chest height. Key locations such as Zoo Road, Ganeshguri, Panjabari, and Guwahati Club were severely affected. The flooding led to school closures and major traffic jams as vehicles, including ambulances, were stranded in waterlogged streets.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rainfall for the next two to three days, with some areas potentially receiving up to 200 mm of precipitation. The worsening weather conditions raise concerns about prolonged waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and landslides in hilly regions.

Emergency teams have been placed on standby, and officials are urging residents to stay cautious, particularly those in low-lying areas. Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah visited flood-affected zones, highlighting challenges in draining water from inundated homes. He also pointed to alleged environmental damage exacerbating the flooding.

The floods have once again brought attention to Guwahati’s inadequate drainage system. Last year, the Gauhati High Court criticised authorities for neglecting the issue and emphasised the need for long-term solutions.
