Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held a press conference in Delhi today, welcoming the central government’s decision to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on kendu leaves from 18% to 5%.
The move is expected to significantly benefit tribal communities engaged in kendu leaf collection and trade.
Majhi emphasized that the GST reduction will lead to increased sales and better income for kendu leaf collectors, who are primarily from economically weaker sections. He also noted that the decision aligns with broader reforms aimed at easing financial burdens on farmers and the middle class.
In addition to kendu leaves, the Chief Minister highlighted that GST on agricultural equipment has also been reduced, which will help lower input costs for farmers. He further stated that Odisha stands to gain more from coal sector reforms and that the GST restructuring will encourage more people to opt for health insurance due to reduced tax rates.
Majhi praised the Modi government for implementing inclusive tax reforms that support rural economies and promote financial well-being across various sectors.
