A shocking incident unfolded in Rayagada on Thursday night when armed miscreants attacked and looted a government employee at gunpoint near the town’s fire station.
The victim, Basant Kumar Mishra, an employee of the Public Works Department, reported that four to five youths stormed into his house around 11 p.m. Armed with guns and knives, they tied him up, assaulted him, and held him captive until 5 a.m.
The attackers looted gold ornaments, cash, household items and forced Mishra to sign bank withdrawal forms. They also transferred ₹11,000 from his phone account. Before leaving, they locked the door from outside and threatened to kill him if he informed the police.
Mishra managed to alert neighbours in the morning, who rescued him and rushed him to the district hospital for treatment. Rayagada police reached the spot soon after and began investigating the case.
