In a world increasingly influenced by global cultural integration, the sacred coastal city of Jagannath Dham Puri continues to fiercely guard its authentic roots through unique, centuries-old traditions.
Among its many sacred celebrations, Gosani Jatra stands out as an indigenous cultural cornerstone unique to Puri, dating back to the twelfth century.
A 16-Day Celebration of Shakti and Heritage
Unlike Durga Puja celebrations found elsewhere, the worship style of the ‘Gosani’ idols is entirely native to Puri and boasts deep historical ties to the Puri Shree Mandir. Spanning 16 days from Ashvina Krishna Paksha Mulastami to Sukla Paksha Navami, the festival brings together elements of Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shakti, Ganapatya, and Saura sects, reflecting the cosmopolitan spirit of the Jagannatha cult.
During the festival, devotees witness a mesmerizing array of idols representing various forms of Maa Durga, including Maa Barabati, Janhikhai, Sunya ‘Gosani’, Belabai, and Gelabai. Alongside these goddesses, the festival showcases striking representations of valour and mythology, including Naga idols, Budha-Budhi, Dasamundiya Ravana (depicting Ravana upholding Kailash Parvat), and a magnificent display of Sampati Chadhei at Markandeshwar Sahi, featuring the mythical bird from the Ramayana adorned with eight legendary warriors on its wings like Hanuman, Angada, and Jambavan.
The Grand Finale: Ekadashi Immersion and Mahadeep
The culmination of the festivities takes place on Ekadashi Tithi during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvina. Clay images of the Gosanis assemble in front of the Singhadwara (Lions’ Gate) of the Jagannath Temple. Late in the night, a ceremonial mahadeep is lit on the temple, following which the deities are taken in grand processions to nearby water bodies for bhasani (immersion).
To ensure a smooth and orderly conduct of the immersion processions, the Shrikhetra Gosani Puja Committee and district administration have coordinated special arrangements, including a specially prepared pond near Shri Setu.
