The Odisha Crime Branch has placed six accused from the Gopalpur gang rape case into two days of remand, as approved by the Berhmapur SDJM court.
The remand aims to aid crime scene recreation and evidence consolidation as the investigation intensifies.
The incident, which shocked the state, involved the gang rape of a young woman who had visited Gopalpur beach with a male friend. Authorities reported that the accused had filmed the assault, with the digital evidence now in the possession of the Crime Branch.
Out of ten individuals initially detained, four were minors. However, due to their age nearing 18, officials have petitioned the court to try them as adults for stricter sentencing. The remaining six were identified by the survivor during a TI parade and were subsequently transferred to jail custody.
The investigation is being fast-tracked with the goal of filing a chargesheet within 15 days. The case will be prosecuted in a fast-track court, with plans to appoint a dedicated and experienced public prosecutor.
Key accused include Pramod Nayak of Purushottampur, who already has two criminal cases pending against him, along with Baburam Dalai and Kunal Pradhan. Authorities confirmed that while three individuals committed the physical crime, others aided in executing the act.
