The Odisha Crime Branch submitted a detailed 574-page chargesheet today in the Berhampur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s court regarding the Gopalpur beach gang rape case.
The case, which shook the conscience of the state, involves the alleged gang rape of a plus-three female student who was visiting the beach with her male friend.
Among the arrested youths, the key accused include Pramod Nayak (23) from Hundata village under Purushottampur police limits, Baburam Dalai (19) and Laxman Pradhan (24) from Burupada under Hinjilicut police limits, Om Pradhan (19) and Deepak Tarai (19) from Shikir village, and Kunal Pradhan (24). Additionally, police have stated that the other four accused are minors from Shikir village.
The incident occurred on the night of June 15 when the victim was assaulted after her male friend was overpowered. The girl was forcibly taken away and raped by three of the accused. The perpetrators abandoned her around 10 PM and fled the scene.
The case triggered widespread outrage across Odisha and drew national attention. In response, the state government handed over the investigation to the Crime Branch, which conducted a thorough probe, including forensic analysis and remand interrogations.
The chargesheet includes detailed evidence, witness testimonies, and forensic findings. The case continues to be monitored closely, with demands for swift justice and stronger measures to ensure women’s safety in public spaces.
