High Demand Despite Rising Prices
Jewellery stores reported heavy footfall and strong sales throughout the day. Many buyers said they were willing to pay higher rates for gold due to the festival’s importance.
Ajoy Chawla, CEO of Titan’s Jewellery Division, told NDTV Profit that customers have accepted the high price trend.
“Consumers realised gold prices are unlikely to drop soon. Many are buying coins and bars as investment options,” he said.
He also mentioned a possible shortage of gold coins, adding that some stores might run out due to the surge in demand.
Why Gold Prices Are Rising
Experts say global market trends and festive demand have pushed prices up. Gold is seen as a safe investment during times of uncertainty. India, the world’s second-largest consumer of gold after China, continues to import large quantities for jewellery and investment needs.
Understanding Gold Purity
-
24-carat gold (24K): The purest form of gold, with 99.99% purity. It is too soft for jewellery and mainly used for investment.
-
22-carat gold (22K): A mix of gold and small amounts of other metals like copper or zinc, making it more durable for jewellery making.
Festive Spirit Continues
The Dhanteras spirit was visible in markets across India. People lined up early to purchase gold coins, bars, and ornaments. Despite the price surge, gold remains a symbol of wealth, stability, and blessings for Indian families.
