The BCCI has strongly backed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who spoke out against the online trolling and harsh criticism aimed at young pacer Harshit Rana.
Harshit Rana Faces Unfair Criticism
At just 23 years old, Harshit Rana has already played two Tests in Australia and lifted the ICC Champions Trophy for India. Yet, the young cricketer has faced constant trolling and allegations of favouritism since his selection for the India vs Australia ODI series.
Former players, including Ravichandran Ashwin and Kris Srikkanth, questioned his selection. Social media users went further, linking it to his past association with Gambhir during their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Gambhir Slams Personal Attacks
The criticism did not sit well with Gautam Gambhir, who called out the unfair targeting of a young player. Although he avoided naming individuals directly, Gambhir’s comments appeared to address Ashwin and Srikkanth.
He said it was “shameful” to publicly humiliate a 23-year-old athlete for content views. Gambhir stressed that players like Harshit Rana need support and confidence, not negativity from within the cricketing community.
“A youngster like Harshit should be encouraged, not pulled down,” Gambhir said firmly.
BCCI Vice-President Supports Gambhir
Backing Gambhir, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla urged former players and fans to act responsibly while criticising athletes.
“Gautam Gambhir is right,” Shukla told ANI.
“If someone has complaints about a player, it should be raised responsibly. Harsh criticism lowers morale. Selection decisions are made by the team, and people must understand the responsibility that comes with their words.”
Behind the Scenes: Team Bonding and Perception
Before India’s second Test against the West Indies, Harshit Rana joined other teammates at Gambhir’s residence for a team dinner. His arrival in a luxury car drew attention online, adding fuel to the “favouritism” narrative.
However, sources close to the team clarified that it was a routine get-together meant to build team spirit — not a reflection of bias.
What Ashwin and Srikkanth Said
Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said he was surprised by Harshit’s inclusion for the Australian tour and wished to understand the selection rationale. He added that while Harshit shows promise as a lower-order batter, he needs to improve consistency.
Meanwhile, Kris Srikkanth criticised the pacer’s on-field celebrations, calling them “filmy” and excessive for a newcomer. He suggested that such behaviour might affect his focus and long-term growth.
BCCI’s Message: Encourage, Don’t Dismiss
The BCCI’s response highlights a key message — constructive criticism should not cross into personal attack. Young players represent India’s cricketing future, and supporting them builds confidence and resilience.
Harshit Rana, one of India’s most promising fast bowlers, remains focused on his game despite the noise. The cricket board and coaching staff continue to stand behind him as he prepares for the upcoming fixtures.
