Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), Sambalpur, received an A Grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on November 27, 2025.
University officials confirmed the recognition after NAAC reviewed GMU’s appeal for re-evaluation.
Earlier, in June 2024, NAAC awarded GMU a score of 2.87 out of 4, which translated into a B++ grade. The university filed an appeal, arguing that several parameters deserved higher marks. NAAC conducted a third review and upgraded GMU to A Grade status.
Deputy Registrar Dr Uma Charan Pati explained that GMU narrowly missed the A Grade in the previous evaluation. He noted that the university sought reconsideration on five key parameters, including infrastructure, campus placements, higher education opportunities, and research publications. NAAC reviewed the appeal online and granted the upgrade.
Evaluation Process
NAAC evaluates institutions on seven broad criteria, each with 15 sub-points. GMU strengthened its performance in multiple areas, including student placements, academic programs, and research output. The committee acknowledged improvements and awarded higher marks during the latest review.
University Profile
GMU became a unitary university in 2015 after functioning as an autonomous college. The institution currently offers 27 undergraduate and postgraduate programs and runs 77 academic courses. It hosts specialised centres such as the Indian Knowledge System Centre, Governance and Public Policy Centre, Gender Studies Centre, and Narayani Panda IT Centre. GMU also contributes to national language research, including Kannada-to-Odia translation projects.
