The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for a fresh low-pressure system likely to form over the northern and central Bay of Bengal around October 1, potentially impacting Durga Puja festivities across eastern India.
According to forecasts, a new upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to emerge over the north Andaman Sea on September 30, which may lead to the development of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal the following day. This system could intensify into a depression by October 2, bringing light to moderate rainfall across coastal Odisha, West Bengal, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Meteorologists warn that the northwestern Bay of Bengal is already experiencing turbulent conditions, with a depression currently active near the Odisha-Andhra coast. The new system may compound rainfall intensity, especially during Saptami to Dashami, key days of Durga Puja celebrations.
The IMD has advised caution for pandal organizers and travelers, as intermittent showers and cloudy skies are expected. While the impact on southern Bengal may be limited, districts like South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram could see heavier rainfall.
Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the Bay of Bengal due to squally winds and rough sea conditions. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will issue updated advisories as the system evolves.
