Four individuals were apprehended by forest officials for the illegal hunting of a wild boar in the Barkot Forest region under Balam Forest Section, Panchamahala village.
The poaching incident occurred last Thursday in the Khadada jungle, where the hunters targeted the animal while it came to drink water.
The poachers, identified as Lipun Sabar (30), Ajay Udabar (37), Suman Patra (38), and Ganesh Choudhury (25), were caught red-handed while transporting the carcass of the wild boar.
Acting on a tip-off, a forest patrol team swiftly moved into action, intercepting the poachers near Panchamahala and recovering the carcass.
During the interrogation, the suspects confessed to killing the boar for the purpose of the meat trade. Following legal procedures, all four were presented in court on Saturday. Their bail pleas were rejected, and they have been remanded to judicial custody, as confirmed by Barakot Range Officer Chittaranjan Purohit.
The incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by wildlife authorities in combating organized poaching activities and protecting the region’s biodiversity. Investigations are ongoing to uncover potential links to larger networks involved in illegal wildlife trade.
