Former Congress MLA and senior political leader Mohammed Moquim has made a significant announcement regarding the formation of a new political party in Odisha, stating that the initiative has reached a decisive stage. The proposed party will be Odisha-centric and dedicated to working for the interests of the people of the state, he said.
Moquim revealed that the party may be named “Odisha Janata Congress” or “Odisha Lok Congress”, adding that consultations with political leaders, supporters, and civil society members are currently underway. Preparations, he said, are progressing at a rapid pace.
Women and Farmers’ Conventions Announced
As part of the groundwork for the new political platform, Moquim announced that a women’s convention will be held on January 30, followed by a farmers’ convention on February 5. These gatherings will focus on discussing key issues affecting women, farmers, and the broader population of Odisha.
He further stated that once the party is formally launched, it will begin preparations with a clear focus on the upcoming municipal and panchayat elections, aiming to strengthen grassroots participation.
Clarification on Sofia Firdous’ Presence
Responding to questions regarding the presence of Congress MLA Sofia Firdous at various programmes, Moquim clarified that she attends these events in her capacity as a trustee of the Moquim Foundation.
“Sofia Firdous remains with the Congress party and continues to work for it,” Moquim said, dismissing speculation about her political alignment.
Political Buzz in Odisha
The announcement has generated considerable discussion in Odisha’s political circles. Observers believe the new party could influence the state’s political dynamics, particularly if leaders dissatisfied within the Congress choose to align with Moquim’s proposed platform.
Whether the new outfit emerges as a significant political force will depend on its organisational strength and public response in the coming months.
