The 20th edition of the Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026, will break new ground with its unique housing arrangement.
Instead of constructing a traditional Athletes’ Village, the organisers will use a cruise ship docked at Kinjo Pier in Nagoya Port as a “floating village” for athletes and officials.
More than 4,600 participants competing in 20 sports—including archery, football, gymnastics, and kabaddi—will call the cruise ship home during the event. The ship will offer essential facilities such as catering, a gym, and equipment storage, ensuring a comfortable stay for the athletes.
An additional 2,400 participants will be accommodated in temporary container homes at Garden Pier, forming an Athletes’ Plaza alongside the cruise ship. This arrangement, inspired by the Paris Olympics, aims to create an engaging and cost-effective solution for athlete housing.
Max Mager, Technical Delegate for BMX Racing, expressed optimism about the concept, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” that could enhance the Games’ atmosphere.
The Asian Games floating village is expected to redefine how major sporting events provide accommodations, blending innovation with practicality.
