At least 30 people have died in the last two days across Northeast India due to devastating landslides and flash floods, with Assam and Arunachal Pradesh bearing the brunt of the disaster.
Over 60,000 people have been affected, as torrential rain continues to wreak havoc across the region.
On Friday alone, 14 fatalities were reported from multiple states — five in Assam and nine in Arunachal Pradesh. One tragic incident in East Kameng district of Arunachal claimed seven lives, including two families, after their vehicle was swept away by a landslide.
In Assam, landslides triggered by continuous rainfall have claimed five lives in the last 24 hours, all in the Kamrup Metropolitan district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Notably, three women died in a landslide in the Bonda area near Guwahati, Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed.
The region is experiencing record-breaking rainfall — Guwahati recorded 111 mm of rain, the highest in a single day in 67 years, causing rivers like the Brahmaputra to swell.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red and orange alert for parts of Assam and orange and yellow alerts for other northeastern states including Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram.
Authorities are on high alert as rescue and relief operations continue across 12 affected districts in Assam, with over 10,000 people displaced in the floods. The situation remains precarious with more rainfall expected.
