Bolangir police rescued five migrant workers and arrested two accused involved in illegal labor trafficking on Tuesday night.
The operation took place in Kantabanji, a town known for its high volume of seasonal migrant laborers. Every year, thousands of workers from this region travel to other states for livelihood. Many take advance payments from sardars and leave without proper documentation.
Police intercepted a group preparing to leave for another state. Officers rescued five laborers—four men and one woman—from Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts. None of them carried valid documents.
Authorities arrested Khyamasagar Meher, a sardar from Belpada area, and Dr. Patel, the vehicle driver. Police registered case number 372/2025 and forwarded both accused to court. Investigations are ongoing, said station officer Gopal Chandra Karna.
The Dadan Workers Rescue highlights the risks faced by laborers who rely on informal channels for employment. Despite government regulations, many sardars bypass legal procedures and exploit vulnerable workers.
Locals expressed concern over the lack of job opportunities in their region. Many workers said they had no choice but to migrate to other states for survival. They urged the government to create more employment options locally.
Police continue efforts to curb illegal labor trafficking and ensure safe migration practices. The rescue operation in Kantabanji reflects growing vigilance against dadan exploitation.
Authorities have warned sardars against violating labor laws and promised strict action. The rescued workers will receive support and counseling before returning home.
