The Ministry of Education has announced a significant increase in the Material Cost under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) Scheme.
The revised rates, effective May 1, 2025, aim to provide better nutritional support to 11.20 crore students across government and government-aided schools.
The Material Cost, which covers essential ingredients like pulses, vegetables, oil, and spices, has been increased by 9.50%. For Balvatika and primary classes, the cost per meal is now ₹6.78, and for upper primary classes, it has been raised to ₹10.17. The additional financial burden, approximately ₹954 crore for FY 2025-26, will be fully borne by the Central Government.
Moreover, the Government supplies 26 lakh metric tons of food grains annually, bearing 100% of the subsidy and transportation cost, valued at ₹9,000 crore. This initiative ensures that no child is deprived of a nutritious meal, enhancing attendance and retention in schools.
The increased funding represents a significant step towards strengthening child welfare and fostering educational participation.
