In a deeply disturbing incident that has triggered widespread condemnation, a female teacher and her male companion were publicly assaulted and paraded through the streets of Nimapara in Puri district.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, was captured on video and went viral across social media platforms.
According to reports, the woman had been living separately from her husband—a college lecturer—due to ongoing marital disputes. Suspecting infidelity, the husband allegedly conspired with friends to catch her in a compromising situation. Around 8 PM, he and his accomplices forcibly entered her rented residence and reportedly found her with a male friend, who is said to be a student leader.
Enraged, the husband dragged both individuals out of the house and forced them to walk to the police station. The woman was garlanded with slippers, verbally abused, and physically assaulted by her husband in full public view. Her companion was also humiliated and made to parade without clothes.
The Kasturi Swain-led police team has arrested the husband and one of his aides for outraging the woman’s modesty. A case has been registered, and all three individuals involved have been detained for interrogation.
The incident has sparked a debate on mob justice, gender-based violence, and the role of bystanders, as many onlookers filmed the ordeal without intervening.
