Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, in Washington on Thursday. During the meeting, Musk gifted Modi a heatshield tile from SpaceX’s Starship that flew to space.
The heatshield tile is a hexagonal ceramic tile designed to protect the Starship during atmospheric re-entry, where it faces extreme temperatures.
The meeting also focused on strengthening collaboration between India and the US in areas such as innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. Regulatory matters related to SpaceX’s Starlink service in India were also discussed.
This meeting and gift symbolize the deepening relationship between India and Musk’s companies in technological and entrepreneurial innovation.
Discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between Indian and US entities in several key areas, including innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. Opportunities to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and good governance were also explored.
However, what caught the eyes of many, was the special gift that Musk handed to PM Modi. It appeared to be a heatshield tile from his behemoth Starship spacecraft that went to space.
Starship’s heatshield tiles are hexagonal ceramic tiles designed to protect SpaceX’s Starship during atmospheric reentry when the spacecraft faces extreme temperatures as it returns to Earth.
Made of silica-based ceramic, similar to the Space Shuttle’s tiles but stronger and more heat-resistant. Unlike the Space Shuttle’s square tiles, the hexagonal design eliminates straight-line gaps, reducing weak points for heat to penetrate. The tiles radiate heat away efficiently, keeping the underlying spacecraft structure cool.
The meeting occurred at a pivotal time as India deliberated on regulatory matters related to satellite internet, specifically SpaceX’s Starlink service.
Starlink’s license application is currently under review amidst disputes over spectrum allocation for satellite services with Reliance Jio, an Indian telecom giant.
Modi and Musk’s meeting is viewed as part of India’s broader effort to assert itself in the global space race, where space-based communications are critical.
India signed the US Artemis Accords in 2023, which established guidelines for modern space activities. The growing partnership between India and Musk’s companies reflects a deepening relationship in technological and entrepreneurial innovation.
