Two days after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar formally resigned from his post, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the commencement of the election process to select his successor.
In an official statement, the Commission said it has begun the necessary procedural steps as per constitutional provisions to fill the vacancy in the office of the Vice President of India. A detailed schedule for the election is expected to be released soon.
Dhankhar’s resignation, which came unexpectedly, has created a significant constitutional vacancy. The Vice President of India also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, making the role crucial in the legislative framework.
This development marks the beginning of what is expected to be an intense political phase, with various parties likely to pitch their candidates for one of the highest constitutional posts in the country.
More details are awaited from the Election Commission.
