A 45-year-old man died after jumping out of a moving ambulance in the Mayurbhanj district on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Sapan Singh of Naranpur village, was reportedly intoxicated and unconscious when locals found him lying by the roadside.
Concerned villagers called a 108 ambulance, suspecting he had fainted. The emergency team picked him up and began transporting him to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital (PRM MCH) in Baripada. Midway through the journey, Sapan regained consciousness and, in a state of panic, removed his oxygen mask and IV drip, forced open the ambulance door, and leapt out.
The fall proved fatal, with Singh sustaining grievous injuries that led to his death on the spot. Police arrived shortly after and sent the body for a postmortem. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and authorities are investigating whether any lapse in ambulance safety protocols contributed to the tragedy.
