A man was arrested Monday evening after a car plowed into a crowd of football fans celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League championship in the city center, Merseyside Police confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after a large-scale celebration involving tens of thousands of fans who had gathered in the rain to watch players parade the Premier League trophy atop open-top buses emblazoned with the message “Ours Again.”
Merseyside Police said the vehicle struck multiple pedestrians before being stopped. The driver was taken into custody at the scene. Emergency services, including police, ambulances, and fire crews, responded swiftly.
Videos circulating on social media — not yet officially verified — show a vehicle speeding through the cheering crowd, appearing to swerve slightly away from the densest section before being surrounded by police. Other footage captured injured individuals lying on the road and angry fans attempting to confront the driver.
A police statement confirmed the suspect remained at the scene and was detained. A tent was erected near the site, with several ambulances attending to the injured.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “appalling” in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing concern for the injured and gratitude to emergency responders. “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he wrote.
