A thought-provoking book titled “Abolishing Child Labour and Pro-active Government Initiatives” by Dr. Sanjukta Maharana was officially launched at the Labour Commissioner’s office conference hall, drawing attention to one of the most urgent social issues of our time.
Renowned literary figure and social reformer Shri Dash Benhur, who released the book, emphasised the power of realistic literature in shaping public consciousness. “Realistic literature is more effective, acceptable and popular than fictional literature. It touches hearts and can guide society toward the right path,” he said, urging writers to address burning societal problems through their work.
Shri Benhur highlighted the persistent global challenge of child labour, especially in developing nations, where children are often forced into hazardous work that robs them of their childhood, education, and dignity. He praised Dr. Maharana’s research-based approach, calling the book a vital contribution to realistic literature and a moral call to action.
Labour Commissioner Shri Indramani Tripathi, attending as an eminent guest, reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating child labour. “This is not just the government’s responsibility—it’s a collective duty. Proactive policies, strict enforcement, and family empowerment are key,” he said.
Former Joint Labour Commissioner Shri Pradeep Mohapatra lauded the book’s depth and relevance, while Shri Samarendra Bhutia, OSD at SCSTRTI, reviewed the research and noted its potential to influence labour policy.
Dr. Maharana shared her personal journey behind the book, dedicating it to her parents and expressing heartfelt gratitude to her mentor, Dr. Ratnawali. The event was moderated by columnist Dr. Dwitichandra Sahu and attended by dignitaries, including Dr. Paramanand Patel, Smt. Bishnupriya Sahu and Talat Affrin.
The book is expected to serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, social workers, and child rights advocates striving to eliminate child labour and protect vulnerable children.
