A woman from Kahneipura village under Khallikote police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district was reportedly set on fire by her in-laws on Monday morning.
The victim, identified as a 23-year-old Arati Parida, sustained approximately 40% burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
According to family sources, Arati had been subjected to recurring harassment and threats for dowry since marrying into the family nearly two years ago. Her love marriage had apparently led to strained relations with her in-laws, culminating in a violent altercation on Sunday night. The alleged attack occurred early Monday when her mother-in-law and brother-in-law reportedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.
Locals and relatives rushed the half-burnt woman first to Khallikote CHC before she was shifted to MKCG for critical care. Doctors have stated that while her injuries are extensive, she remains in stable condition.
The Khallikote police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances behind the incident. While officials are probing various angles—including the possibility of a self-inflicted act triggered by mental distress—no formal complaint has yet been lodged by either the victim or her maternal family.
Authorities emphasised that further action will be based on an official FIR and medical assessment reports.
This incident raises urgent questions about the enforcement of dowry prohibition laws and the protection mechanisms available for women facing domestic violence in Odisha’s rural heartlands.
