India celebrated a landmark moment in para athletics as Dilip Mahadu Gavit sprinted to gold in the men’s T47 100m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, clocking a Games‑record 10.71 seconds.

Compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath followed close behind to secure silver, marking a historic one‑two finish for the nation.

The 23‑year‑old Gavit, hailing from Maharashtra, exploded out of the blocks and maintained his lead through the finish line, showcasing explosive acceleration and remarkable consistency. Competing in the T47 category for athletes with upper limb impairments, Gavit overcame the loss of his right arm below the elbow to emerge as one of India’s finest para sprinters.

This triumph adds to his growing legacy, which includes gold in the 400m T47 at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 and a final appearance at the Paris Paralympics 2024. While he entered CWG 2026 as a medal contender in the 400m, his success in the shorter sprint underlined his versatility and rising stature as a complete sprinter.

Basil’s silver medal reinforced India’s dominance in the event, reflecting the depth of talent in the country’s para athletics programme. With this sweep, India’s medal tally at CWG 2026 rose to 15 medals (3 gold, 9 silver, 3 bronze), placing the nation eighth overall and highlighting consistent international success.

Together, Gavit and Basil’s podium finish symbolises the rapid progress of Indian para athletics and inspires a new generation of athletes to aim higher on the global stage.
