A devotee, identified as Babaji Behera from Patalei village in Jagatsinghpur, fell from the Radhaballav Mutt, located in front of the Puri Srimandir’s Singhadwar (Lion’s Gate), sustaining critical injuries on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred amidst the vibrant celebrations of Suna Besha, where thousands gathered to witness Lord Jagannath adorned in gold ornaments. According to eyewitnesses, Behera suffered severe head injuries.. He was immediately rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital for initial treatment before being transferred to a medical facility in Cuttack for advanced care.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact circumstances leading to the fall. Preliminary reports suggest that Behera may have lost his balance while attempting to evade a monkey, causing him to fall from the mutt’s elevated structure.
The Radhaballav Mutt, a prominent vantage point for devotees seeking a better view of the festival, was crowded at the time. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures at such historic structures during large-scale religious events.
Local police are investigating the matter, but details remain unclear about how Behera accessed the upper level of the mutt.
