Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Vows Strict Action on Private School Fee Hikes

In response to growing outrage over alleged unjustified fee hikes by private schools in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday promised stern action against erring institutions and assured parents their grievances are being addressed.

Speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, Gupta stated,

“No school has any right to harass parents or children. There are rules and regulations for fee hikes, and they must be followed. If any school is found violating them, they will have to face action. Notices are being issued today.”

The government’s move comes on the heels of a protest outside a private school in Dwarka last week, where parents accused the management of not only hiking fees but also allegedly confining students inside the school library for 25 days.

  • One parent claimed this so-called “library arrest” began on March 20, leaving students distressed during school hours.

  • The school has not yet responded publicly to these serious allegations.

Government Response:

  • Education Minister Ashish Sood confirmed that an inspection team visited the school in question after multiple complaints.

  • All sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) have now been instructed to inspect schools citywide and gather data using an 18-point questionnaire on fee compliance.

  • A dedicated email ID has been launched for parents to report unjustified fee hikes.

  • A special committee has been formed, comprising the Deputy Director of Education and the Director of Accounts, to review financial practices in private schools.

The Delhi government’s aggressive stance signals a broader push for transparency and accountability in private education, aiming to protect parents from exploitative fee structures and children from mistreatment. As investigations unfold, more clarity is expected on the shocking claims emerging from the Dwarka school.
