Italy captured its third consecutive Davis Cup title on Sunday, defeating Spain 2-0 in the final at Bologna.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli delivered decisive singles victories to secure the historic triumph.
Berrettini opened the tie with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 win over Pablo Carreno Busta. Backed by a roaring home crowd, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up struck 13 aces and 21 winners, extending his Davis Cup singles winning streak to 11 matches. “The team is big, we’re guys who love each other. And now come on, Flavio, go for it,” Berrettini said after his win.
Cobolli then staged a remarkable comeback against Jaume Munar. After losing the first set 1-6 and trailing early in the second, the 23-year-old Italian fought back to level the match in a tense tiebreak. He eventually sealed the decider 7-5, converting his seventh set point and sending the crowd into jubilation. “It’s impossible to describe this feeling. I dreamed a lot this night. I don’t know how I won. The only thing I know is that I’m a world champion,” Cobolli said.
The victory marked Italy’s fourth Davis Cup crown overall, following wins in 1976, 2023, and 2024. More significantly, Italy became the first nation to win three consecutive Davis Cup titles since the Challenge Round was abolished in 1971.
Both teams missed key players, with Spain deprived of Carlos Alcaraz and Italy without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. Yet Berrettini and Cobolli rose magnificently to the occasion, ensuring Filippo Volandri’s team etched its name in history.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed the achievement, posting on X: “Determination, talent and heart: Italy triumphs again in the Davis Cup.”
