The 12551 Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express met with a tragic accident near Nergundi Station in Cuttack on Sunday, resulting in the derailment of 11 coaches.

The incident left one passenger dead and eight others injured, including one critically wounded.

The deceased was identified as Suvankar Roy, a 22-year-old from West Bengal. Indian Railways has announced ex gratia compensation, offering Rs 5 lakh to the deceased’s family, Rs 2 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 for passengers with minor injuries.

Following the accident, rescue operations were promptly carried out by East Coast Railway (ECoR), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and National Disaster Management Force (NDRF). Stranded passengers were provided with medical assistance, food, and drinking water. A special train was arranged to transport them to their destinations.

Train services on the Howrah-Visakhapatnam UP Line have resumed, while Down Line trains are being diverted via alternative routes. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has launched a probe into the causes of the derailment, aiming to ensure railway safety and prevent future mishaps.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the nation, raising concerns about passenger safety on Indian Railways. Authorities have pledged to provide assistance to affected passengers and address infrastructural challenges.
