Tensions have escalated in Birgunj city of Nepal, located near the Indian border with Bihar, following a dispute triggered by a religiously sensitive TikTok video. In response to the deteriorating law-and-order situation, the district administration has imposed and repeatedly extended a curfew across several parts of the city.
According to reports, the unrest began after a video allegedly containing religiously targeted remarks was posted from Dhanusha district’s Kamala Municipality. The video led to a confrontation between two community groups, prompting intervention by local authorities.
As the situation intensified, the District Administration Office (DAO) of Parsa first imposed prohibitory orders on Monday afternoon. Despite restrictions, gatherings and protests continued, leading authorities to enforce a full curfew from 6 pm on Monday to 8 am Tuesday, which was later extended first till 1 pm and subsequently till 6 pm on Tuesday due to persistent security concerns.
The curfew applies to key areas within Birgunj Metropolitan City, including Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa (East), Sirsia River (West), Gandak Chowk (North), and Shankaracharya Gate (South).
Under the curfew, all movement, public gatherings, demonstrations, processions, and meetings are prohibited. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Essential services such as ambulances, fire services, health workers, media personnel, and airport-bound passengers are permitted movement with proper coordination and identification.
Officials have cautioned that strict action may be taken against violations, urging public cooperation to help restore peace and stability.
What triggered the unrest?
The situation reportedly became volatile on Sunday after two youths allegedly uploaded a TikTok video in Janakpur, Dhanusha, which locals claimed hurt religious sentiments. The individuals were later handed over to the police.
Tensions further escalated after reports of vandalism at a mosque in Ward 6 of Kamala Municipality, triggering protests and rallies. Demonstrators blocked roads, burned tyres, and raised slogans in Birgunj and surrounding areas.
What began as a local dispute in Dhanusha and Parsa districts spread rapidly through social media, intensifying communal sentiments and prompting heightened security measures by authorities.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have appealed to citizens to avoid misinformation, remain calm, and support efforts to maintain harmony.
