A shocking incident occurred in Rajgangpur block’s Lanjiberna area on Friday night when a minor college student attempted self-immolation after a reported dispute with a local youth.
The girl, a student of Sarbati College in Rajgangpur, returned home in the afternoon. Later in the evening, she allegedly poured kerosene on herself following an argument. Flames engulfed her body, but her mother rushed to extinguish the fire and immediately sought help from neighbours.
The injured student was first taken to the Kalimela health centre. Since the facility lacked a burn unit, she was shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) for advanced treatment. Doctors confirmed that she sustained serious burn injuries and continue to monitor her condition.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and began an investigation. Officers are examining the circumstances that led to the incident and have recorded preliminary statements.
Community members expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support systems for young students facing emotional distress.
