A severe cold wave continues to tighten its grip across Odisha, with temperatures plunging sharply and disrupting daily life in several parts of the state. The biting cold has made early morning movement difficult, particularly for children, older adults and outdoor workers.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave conditions are likely to persist across Odisha over the coming week. Dry weather is expected to prevail, and there are currently no indications of a significant rise in temperatures. As a result, residents are likely to experience cold nights and chilly mornings for the next several days.

Temperatures fall below 10°C in many districts

Semiliguda in Koraput district recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 5.7 degrees Celsius. Koraput town followed closely at 6 degrees Celsius, while G. Udayagiri reported a minimum of 6.6 degrees Celsius.

Other regions also experienced sharp drops in temperature. Jharsuguda recorded 7.2 degrees Celsius, while Daringbadi—often referred to as the ‘Kashmir of Odisha’—logged 8 degrees Celsius. Boudh reported a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius.

Several areas saw temperatures hovering close to 10 degrees Celsius, including Chiplima, Angul, Rayagada and Nabarangpur, highlighting the widespread impact of the cold spell across the state.

Authorities urge precautions

The prolonged cold wave has raised concerns for vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens and young children. Authorities have advised residents to take adequate precautions, including wearing warm clothing and avoiding prolonged exposure to cold during early morning and late-night hours.

The IMD continues to closely monitor weather conditions, warning that the cold wave shows no immediate signs of easing. Residents are urged to stay updated with official weather advisories as Odisha braces for continued wintry conditions.
