Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik won the Hinjili assembly seat by a margin of 4636 votes defeating his nearest rival Sishir Mishra of BJP. Patnaik has been elected to the state assembly from the Hinjili segment for the sixth time. He has been contesting from the Hinjili seat since 2000.
However, the BJD supremo lost from the Kantabanji seat to BJP candidate Laxman Bag. This is the first time Naveen Patnaik has suffered an electoral defeat. His own party, BJD is also staring at defeat as the BJP has made major gains in the state by leading in 78 seats and is looking forward to forming the government, ending Patnaik’s dreams of becoming the nation’s longest-serving chief minister of the country, a record held by Sikkim’s former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.
